Default Set newly acquired heroes to GUARD by default

To my knowledge, warr and para heroes, and possibly rangers are automatically set to FIGHT when you acquire them, and I've just about had it.

It's merely an inconvenience when you're running either a W/ or P/ hero to level and only remember that they came set to FIGHT after they've caused an over aggroey mess. Those are for the most part recoverable, unless that cretin Koss acts out in the Venta Cemetary mission at a particularly bad time.

But then there are the s*** noobs. After adding them and filling the party up /w your own heroes and instead of bringing henchies you let the nub run their own heroes partly out of pity and partly to let them level 'em.

Their heroes will NEVER be set to anything except for the default, and no amount of explaining, coercing, or even swearing or shouting in team chat will get them to change it.

I realize that heroes aren't particularly liked by a certain demographic of GW players, but really, this small change will at least remove a minor deterrent to pugging.

There are some "not so experienced" players who want their heroes on fight. And as wrong as they may be, they will refuse to change it. I don't think setting heroes to Guard automatically when acquired will change that. As for forgetting your heroes are on attack, well that is something you'll just have to remember to change. This is not so big of an issue that it needs to be changed for you.

I don't find it to be such a big issue either: on your heroes, you should always check everytime anyway and when you take somebody else who is not experienced/whatever then you take that risk (quite often though it'll be that war/sin/monk aggroing half of the map without the help of any heroes ). I find it much more bothersome that war henchies are set to fight instead of guard to tell the truth.

Someone please explain when "Fight" is a good option. Seriously, I am all ears.

Since I always check which setting is enabled, the default only changes whether I click or not. It's not a big deal.

But if this is the core problem you have, then wouldn't those people just change their heroes from "Guard" to "Fight?"

but seriously...just stop forgetting to change their status and stop complaining. will it really be the end of the world if your level 4 Koss dies?
didn't think so...

if u wanna be sure the hero doesn't aggro, set it b4 you leave town or don't bring 1.

Oh, it's not the fact that they intentionally want them to fight. I'm pretty sure that the majority of ppl out there just don't know any better and lack the reading comprehension in order to actually be able to figure out how to change it on the fly.

Really, setting the default to something more manageable will only help them in the long run.

Or as MrB already pointed out, I can't think of a single situation where that setting is even necessary. Might as well be done away with alltogether.

It may save a certain demographic from itself.

agreed.

The "fight" setting serves no purpose, and having it as the default is an annoyance plain and simple.

Normally I don't care about these things where it saves you one click, but given that Fight is basically never useful, it would be useful for new players to be accustomed to Guard.

Back during prophecies I learned a whole lot of tricks to getting henchmen to do exactly what I wanted, long before any hard controls were put in. I knew how to get them to engage groups, I knew how to get them to disengage groups, I knew how to stop them from running off to aggro.

These tricks still work, though they are largely overshadowed by the new controls. Moreover the problems with 'fight', namely heroes running too far head or engaging when the player does not desire can easily be overcome. To me, this leaves the 'guard' setting to be a setting that makes heroes slow to target, have to be hand held on what to target, and regularly will not engage.

Of course what I use largely depends upon what I'm playing. On warrior where I'm always on the offensive, the 'guard' target selection and new target requirements are always being met, so that's what I use. On caster I have to more carefully pick my spell placements, my own position, and what I'm doing, so constantly either pinging targets or wanding to force 'guard' characters to take action is a huge distraction. And of course in neither case will I refuse to change those settings if another becomes more beneficial. There really is a use for 'fight', its not as if the heroes are unpredictable, its just a different set of reactions.
